Q: Where my true players at?A: EVERYWHEREAs we discussed in our Gen Z and gaming webinar earlier this week, 9 out of 10 young people (and this includes Millennials!) are players.However, this does not necessarily make them gamers, at least according to YPulse.When asked, only 66% of Gen Z and Millennials actually self-identify as a gamer.Why the discrepancy?Gamer is a polarizing term to young people. It involves being a part of a much larger culture, regardless of how much or how little you play — which is often the basis for “gamer” status by other researchers. We prefer self-identification as an approach because it tells us much more about the person’s enthusiasm and intent as it relates to gaming.My wife and I are great examples here. Even though we’re not Gen Z (she’s a Millennial, I’m a Baby Xer), the player vs. gamer dynamic is pretty apparent.She plays daily, alternating between our Switch (shout out to Fae Farm), her mobile, and occasionally some Xbox. However, she would die before she ever identified herself as a gamer. She doesn’t care one iota about gaming reviews, media, or culture. Although she did perk up when I told her about the Fallout series on Amazon (we absolutely loved Fallout 3).Meanwhile I play weekly at best—more like biweekly TBH. I typically prefer longer gaming sessions which I really don’t have the time for. The fact I still haven’t completed Starfield irritates the hell out of me. However, I do consider myself a gamer. I follow the culture closely.
