Location: Remote; Washington, D.C. preferred or ability to travel to DC regularly as well as other domestic travel for partner meetings, conferences, and all-team retreats (~15% time)

Our current focus communities include Montgomery, Alabama; Chicago, Illinois; Immokalee, Florida; Newark, New Jersey; Massachusetts; North Carolina; and Pima County, Arizona. We generate and disseminate learnings from across this network and center and uplift the voices of community partners to advance policy change and investment in stronger community health systems nationally.

Position Overview:

The Senior Director of Advocacy (Senior Director) is a key leadership role within PIH-US, responsible for leading PIH-US’s Advocacy team, driving the organization’s advocacy and movement building efforts at the local, state, and federal levels and serving as a key deputy and adviser to the Executive Director.

The Senior Director is responsible for designing PIH-US’s advocacy and movement building strategy, including developing, advancing, and implementing the organization’s US policy priorities, managing relationships with elected officials and regulatory agencies, as well as building effective engagement by staff across the country in these processes. The Senior Director will lead partnership development and coalition strategy to advance policies that strengthen U.S. public health infrastructure, the community-based workforce and elevate the roles of community leaders to advance health and racial equity at the local, state, and federal levels. The ideal candidate will bring a track record of mobilizing communities and coalitions and experience in collaborating deeply with others in the health equity movement ecosystem to turn shared priorities into policy wins. We value and make preference for those with lived experience related to the health inequities we are advocating to change. Previous experience as a Community Health Worker (CHW) or working as a CHW ally are also a plus.

The Senior Director will have experience and strong skills in strategy development, advocacy campaign design, and large-scale coalition building within the U.S. context. They will serve as a senior member of the PIH-US leadership team, working alongside colleagues in programs, communications, and learning and impact to design and advance national change and influence agendas. The Senior Director will serve as a key external spokesperson for PIH-US with diverse audiences. The Senior Director will also manage a team of two, with the potential to grow the team.

Specific Responsibilities:

PIH-US advocacy and movement-building strategy (30%)

  • Lead the development and continual assessment/iteration of PIH-US’ national health equity policy and advocacy strategy, integrating policy, advocacy, organizing and communications to advance PIH-US’s strategic priorities.
  • Oversee the development of high-quality persuasive policy briefs, policy recommendations, advocacy materials, reports and articles, and internal messaging through collaboration across the organization for U.S. domestic health equity policy efforts.
  • Work with PIH-US teams and partners in focus communities to support local, state, and federal advocacy efforts and build capabilities.

Government relations and coalition building (30%)

  • Drive identification and formation of new alliances, coalitions, and partnerships for PIH-US that help to advance our U.S. policy agenda and build the movement for health equity; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse range of parties from grassroots and community power building organizations to policy makers.
  • Support the PIH-US Advocacy Lead for Federal and State Policy and the PIH-US Advocacy Engagement Manager in executing strategies for government relations and coalition building.
  • Manage and track federal and state lobbying by PIH-US, including relationships with contract lobbyists, and any compliance requirements.

Team and project management (20%)

  • Manage and direct the PIH-US advocacy team’s day-to-day work, growth, and professional development; directly manage 2 staff with the potential to grow the team.
  • Provide strategic leadership, staff coaching, and administrative and managerial oversight in line with PIH workplace values.
  • Develop staffing strategy and continually assess recruiting priorities to meet advocacy team needs.
  • Support budget and project management, tracking advocacy-specific grants and spending, with support from PIH finance, grants, and compliance teams.
  • Evaluate performance and advocacy and movement-building impact using appropriate key performance indicators (KPIs) and project metrics in collaboration with PIH-US monitoring & evaluation team; support donor reporting as needed.

PIH-US national leadership (20%)

  • Serve as a senior leader, collaborating closely with and advising PIH-US executive director, in the development of overall organizational strategy and priorities.
  • Serve as a member of the PIH-US leadership team, ensuring strategic, operational and values alignment across PIH-US’s place-based programming, advocacy, and operations.
  • Partner closely with the PIH-US communications team to leverage data and stories to inform narratives of our advocacy and policy work for multiple audiences.
  • Lead coordination of PIH-US strategy, campaigns, and relationship management with PIH’s global advocacy team.
  • Drive identification of new potential funding sources for PIH-US’s advocacy and movement-building work; collaborate closely with PIH-US Executive Director and Director, Partnerships in stewarding key funder relationships.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for PIH-US in both internal and external engagement, including collaborating with and providing external reports to funders and other partners, and contributing learnings and insights within PIH-US and PIH networks.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of professional experience in U.S. policy, advocacy, and movement building, including 3-5+ years managing direct reports.
  • Track record of providing recommendations to and influencing senior U.S. policy makers.
  • Experience working in complex multi-stakeholder environments, and ability to quickly gain and understand the political dynamics.
  • Exceptional diplomatic and interpersonal skills and ability to build strong professional relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent communications and writing skills including the ability to communicate complex messages to broad audiences; ability to craft strong compelling narratives and messaging to advance advocacy goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, health and racial equity.
  • Recognizes ways that race and other identities intersect in the work, especially with communities we serve. Comfortable talking about identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, or gender in plain, specific terms. Understands the historical context for racial inequity in the U.S. and its present-day implications.
  • Able to reflect on and describe the impact of one’s own identities—and those of others—in a given situation, decision, or process. Demonstrates awareness of growing edges. Able to hear, reflect, act on, and learn from feedback re: identity and equity.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in public health, political science, public policy or a related field desired.
  • Previous experience working with and alongside community health workers; previous experience working as a CHW a plus.
  • Subject matter expertise in community health, public health, health workforce or community-based organizations and capacity building.
  • Experience working with federal policymakers and agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Health Resources and Services Administration as well as experience working with state legislatures.
  • Lived experience related to the health inequities we are advocating to change.
  • Demonstrated track record with media relations, public speaking, and web/social media engagement.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $100,000 and $140,000/year. The starting salary offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market for the position, job-related knowledge, skills and experience.

Subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable plans then in effect, eligible employees may enroll in a 401(k) plan with employer match, as well as participate in organization-sponsored medical, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability insurance, and basic life insurance plans for the employee and the employee’s eligible dependents. Full time employees will receive 15 days of vacation, 12 sick days, 3 personal days, and 3 volunteer days in addition to paid time off during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, the week of July 4th, and 11 additional holidays annually.
