Roblox. The Metaverse.Did we get it all wrong?When we look at the metaverse(s), it has become an e-commerce platform and virtually replicating physical experiences.We've seen big companies pour massive investments into it, only to realise it's just another distribution channel designed to sell services and goods.Imagine my excitement (Not!) when I saw the first replicas of physical storefronts, sometimes identical to their real-world counterparts. Even the metaverse physics were no different. Now, you can buy and sell virtual properties or spend your time and money in a fancy and exclusive VIP world.The revolutionary metaverse concept was being reduced to a funny-looking marketplace.But I wonder:- What's the value added?- Is this what consumers asked for?- Whose problems do we solve with this Metaverse?And then comes a game like Roblox, an eye-opener that is shifting the paradigm of the metaverse. Its focus wasn't on selling products. It was about creating experiences, building worlds, inventing games, and fostering creativity. Roblox showed us that the metaverse could be a canvas for creativity, a playground for the imagination, and not just another e-commerce store.It is a lesson we could have learned earlier. - WoW allowed us to explore worlds and learn new professions- Zelda's TotK triggered our creativity in crafting vehicles- Minecraft gave us the freedom to build our worlds- GTA kept reinventing itself with fan-created modsSo here's my proposition for the metaverse: 1) Let's focus on creating experiences first.2) Let's encourage and reward user-generated content.3) Let players engage with brands through experiences.What do you think about the current state and future of the metaverse?P.S. The appeal of VR is in its very name. We go to experience a different reality than our own; for places, games, or experiences we can’t feasibly or can’t ever experience in reality.Failing that hurdle means another dead metaverse for the pile.That is the TLDR of my comment.Writing it got me thinking, and led me to aThought. People focus so much on the ‘Meta’ of ‘Metaverse’ that they forget the uni-‘verse’.So many Metaverse attempts fall flat on their faces because they try and be the sole builders of it.What Roblox and VRChat do right is provide users the means to organically build that universe for themselves.The early internet was built by users; If a company wants a Metaverse, they gotta accept that their name may be on it, but it’s only going to be as the platform the users build on.

On November 3rd, the platform announced the opening of The Sandbox Map to all “LAND” owners, enabling them to publish their own experiences without undergoing a previously required application process. This move, according to the co-founders of The Sandbox, underscores their commitment to empowering individual creators and brands to shape the future of the metaverse.The Sandboxco-founder BORGET Sebastien highlighted the central role of user-generated content and property ownership in the platform’s strategy. Borget stated that users are drawn to blockchain not solely for the value of digital assets but because it allows them to create content. By eliminating barriers to entry, The Sandbox aims to foster a thriving ecosystem of user-generated experiences.This inclusiveapproachis set to be further enhanced with updates to the platform’s Game Maker tool, scheduled for release before 2024.
